STD test

If you are sexually active, STD testing is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health. An STD test helps to detect infections so that treatment can begin as soon as possible and high-risk complications can be avoided.

STD testing: STD screening

STD stands for sexually transmitted diseases. These are most commonly – but not exclusively – sexually transmitted. STDs include

  • HIV,
  • chlamydia,
  • genital herpes,
  • genital warts,
  • gonorrhoea,
  • certain forms of hepatitis,
  • syphilis, and
  • trichomoniasis venereal diseases.

STDs do not always cause symptoms, so someone can be infected without knowing it, which is why STD screening is important.

The importance of STD screening

If you are sexually active, you should get screened for STIs, especially if

  • you are about to start a new relationship;
  • partners are thinking about not using condoms or other methods of contraception;
  • when planning a baby;
  • multiple sexual partners; or
  • symptoms that may indicate a sexually transmitted infection.

For what symptoms is STD testing recommended?

A complete STD screening can shed light on any latent disease, but it is always worth getting an STD test if you have certain symptoms:

  • unusual discharge from the vagina, penis or anus;
  • pain when passing urine;
  • lumps, skin growths, rashes around the genitals or anus;
  • unusual vaginal bleeding;
  • itching in the genitals or around the anus;
  • blisters and sores around the genitals or anus, or
  • warts around the genitals or anus.

What to know about STD screening

Depending on your sexual history, your doctor may order various tests to check for sexually transmitted infections, including blood and urine tests that can detect gonorrhoea, syphilis or HIV infection.

If certain diseases are suspected, a vaginal, cervical or urethral sample will be taken using a sterile cotton swab, while in the case of a wound or wart, the sample will be taken from the surface.

STD test for women

Men and women are equally at risk of STDs, but because of their anatomy, women are at a much higher risk of infection than men. This is mainly due to the fact that bacteria grow more easily in the vagina than in the penis, which can lead to bacterial STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

All sexually active women under the age of 25 should be screened annually for gonorrhoea and tested for chlamydia, and it is also important to test mothers-to-be for syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C from early in pregnancy.

STD screening for men

Certain STDs may be more common in men, but because infections often lie dormant without symptoms, it is easy for them to develop silently. STDs do not go away without treatment and can cause irreversible damage. Gonorrhea testing is particularly important to control the bacteria that causes gonorrhoea, also known as gonorrhoea or gonorrhoea bacillus, as almost 10% of infected men are asymptomatic and continue to infect their partners without knowing it.
