Lipoma Removal

What is Lipoma or fat lump?

The lipoma, also called as adipose tumor is a usually benign slow-growing, fatty lump most often located between the skin and the underlying muscle layer. Although these fatty lumps can occur at any age, they’re most common between the age of 40 and 60 years. It is very rare that these lipomas develop into malignant tumor, liposarcoma.

  • The other non-cancerous fatty substance that develops subcutaneously is called sebaceous cyst which is a fluid-filled cyst under the surface of the skin. In most cases these types of cysts are removed by laser treatment.
  • The third most common lesions are fibromas which are benign tumors or growths consisting of fibrous. Fibromas are typically treated with cryotherapy, laser treatment or hyfrecation.

Symptoms of Lipoma

A lipoma can occur anywhere in the body and has the following characteristics:

  • They are located just under the skin, usually occur on the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms and thighs, but fat nodules can also occur on the head.
  • They are soft and pasty to the touch, moving easily with slight pressure.
  • They are usually small. Lipomas are usually less than 5 centimeters in diameter, but they can grow further.
  • They can sometimes be painful if they grow bigger and press on nearby nerves.

It is not possible to remove the fat clump at home and it is forbidden to squeeze it. Since it takes a specialist to identify lumps and growths, you should always consult a doctor if you notice this type of lesion on your skin.

When can it be required to remove the lipoma?

Lipomas usually do not need to be removed, but your doctor may recommend surgery if the lipoma is:

  • growing
  • painful
  • unaesthetic

Procedure of lipoma removal

Lipoma removal is mostly performed by a combination of surgical excision and fat node extraction, which is performed in our clinic under surgical conditions. It is not possible to remove the fat node by a laser.

  • The procedure is performed after a dermatological consultation.
  • Lipoma removal is usually performed under local anesthesia with a skin incision over the lump.
  • The fatty tumor is removed with the fibrous capsule and the wound is fused with a plastic skin suture.
  • The excised tumor is sent for histological examination after surgery to rule out the possibility of a malignant tumor.
  • After the out-patient surgery the patient can usually be discharged the same day.
