After lung cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. Each year, there are around 4-75 00 new cases and between 2 100 and 2 200 deaths. One in 8 women will develop it in her lifetime.
Breast surgery is an operation on the female or male breast(s). There are different types of breast surgery. They can be for medical reasons, such as cancer, or for cosmetic reasons (plastic surgery). The followings are some of the surgical procedures performed as a result of cancer.
Part or all of the breast and possibly nearby lymph nodes are removed to get rid of the cancer.
Sometimes the breasts are removed to prevent breast cancer.
The most common reason for reconstruction is to restore the breast tissue after removal of a breast tumor.
