What is Audiology

What is Audiology

Audiology is the field of medicine concerned with the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of hearing and balance disorders.

As a complement to the specialist medical examination, patients undergo hearing tests conducted in a specialized soundproof booth. These tests help determine the type and degree of hearing loss, based on which a personalized treatment plan is provided during the follow-up consultation. These additional examinations can also reveal underlying conditions that may be causing the hearing problems, such as nerve-related disorders or speech comprehension difficulties.

There are two main types of hearing loss: Conductive hearing loss, which results from issues in the outer or middle ear, and Sensorineural (or perceptive) hearing loss, which is caused by damage to the auditory nerve.

Why is hearing screening important, and what are the warning signs?

Hearing plays a fundamental role in orientation, communication, and maintaining quality of life. Because hearing loss often develops gradually and unnoticed, we recommend participating in an annual screening.

Common warning signs include:

  • Ringing, buzzing, or a sensation of fullness in the ears
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Dizziness or balance disorders
  • The feeling of “I can hear, but I don’t understand”
  • Complaints about mumbling, fast speech, or disturbing loud noises
  • Hearing issues following middle ear infections or viral illnesses
  • Hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure
  • Sudden onset hearing loss

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, we recommend scheduling an initial consultation with one of our audiologists or ENT specialists.

What happens during a specialist audiological examination?

What happens during a specialist audiological examination?

During the examination, the audiologist will first ask questions about the nature of your complaints, previous symptoms, any relevant family history, current conditions, general health, and medical history. Please bring all previous audiological records with you.

The specialist will assess the condition of your ears and, if necessary, perform ear canal cleaning. To further refine the diagnosis, the audiologist may request an audiometric hearing test to be performed in a special soundproof booth during a follow-up appointment.

Patients can schedule soundproof booth hearing tests online or by phone after ear canal cleaning. A specialist referral or indication not older than three months is required for this examination.

During the follow-up audiological consultation, the audiologist or ENT specialist will evaluate the test results and develop a treatment plan to support your recovery.
