Lung screening
Lung screening can detect cancers that are not yet causing symptoms. An X-ray of the lungs allows a specialist to detect any lesions in time. A chest CT scan gives an even clearer picture of abnormalities.
Why is a lung screening important?
Lung screening used to play an important role in the fight against tuberculosis, or TB, but with the decline of the infectious disease, it is now used to detect serious lung diseases such as lung cancer early.
Chest X-rays can be used to detect various infections or chest air pockets that can cause the lungs to collapse. It can also indicate chronic lung diseases such as emphysema or cystic fibrosis and complications associated with these diseases.
A CT scan of the chest can also help to detect lung problems such as lung cancer, pneumonia, nodular lung lesions, the presence of fluid in the lungs or a decrease in lung airflow. It can also be used to determine whether there are signs of metastatic lesions in the lung tissue or lymph nodes.
Following the screening tests, we will also recommend any further work that needs to be done (follow-up, additional or specialist tests).
The lung screening procedure
During a chest X-ray, the patient stands shirtless in front of the X-ray machine with shoulders rolled forward. The X-ray assistant will ask you to take a deep breath and hold it in for a few seconds while the X-ray is taken.
During the chest CT scan, you should lie still while the scanning assistant gives instructions over a loudspeaker. The CT scanner works by a lying surface sliding in and out of a wide ring. The scanner uses a special low-dose X-ray beam to take a series of images of the lungs, which are stitched together by a computer. The procedure is quick and painless and takes only a few minutes.
Lung screening: CT scan vs X-ray
Chest CT gives a more detailed picture than X-ray. A chest X-ray, for example, can identify an abnormality, but a chest CT can also show its exact location and the nature of the abnormality.
- A chest X-ray gives a 2D image, while a chest CT gives a 3D image.
- The X-ray machine is much smaller and less complex than a CT scan because X-rays take complex summation images, while a CT scan rotates around the patient’s chest, so that lesions can be characterised from three directions of space at the same time.
- Chest X-rays are cheap and simple, but in order to make a diagnosis and progress with treatment, a chest CT scan may be necessary to obtain a more accurate image.
