Allergology is concerned with the recognition, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of allergic diseases. An allergic reaction is an over-sensitivity, an excessive reaction to substances that would not normally cause any reaction in the body. These substances are known as allergens, which can enter the body through the respiratory tract, skin and the digestive tract.
During the allergological examination, we identify possible allergens on the basis of complaints and confirm them by means of the tests ordered (e.g. skin tests, blood samples). At the end of the examination, patients receive therapeutic recommendations such as drug therapy, a personalised diet or skin care advice.
For certain respiratory allergens, home immunotherapy treatment under the tongue is also available. This is the only available outpatient therapy that can be used to make the body tolerant to the allergen. This can leave the patient completely symptom and complaint free for the rest of their life, even without medication.
For respiratory and insect sting allergy complaints, a specialist allergist examination is recommended, and for dermatological or food allergy complaints, a full allergist examination is recommended.
