Shockwave stone treatment (ESWL)

Electric Shock Wave Stone Treatment (ESWL): One of the most significant achievements of the last decade.
It involves using an externally generated, high-energy shock wave to break up kidney stone with continuous pulses. After nearly 20 minutes, the tiny stone fragments are evacuated through the renal tubules and then the urethra. The procedure is painless and does not require any anaesthesia.

The procedure is repeatable and does not damage the kidney.
ESWL treatment can be used in about 90% of people with kidney disease.

The kidneys' main functions:

The kidneys' main functions:

  • excretes toxins, ions and fluid
  • the body strives for a proper acid-base balance
  • is involved in regulating blood pressure
  • is responsible for blood formation
  • influences bone metabolism
  • and also plays a role in blood sugar metabolism.

The most common chronic kidney diseases do not initially cause symptoms, but may be indicated by abnormal results in urine and blood tests. In the acute or advanced stages of the chronic form, there may be high blood pressure, anaemia, nausea, weakness, too much or too little urine, oedema throughout the body and difficulty breathing.

The following diseases are covered by nephrology:

The following diseases are covered by nephrology:

  • Acute kidney injury and kidney failure. Kidney damage and renal failure are most often caused by a disturbance in fluid balance or some other kidney-damaging agent, such as a toxin, infection, circulatory disturbance or hypoxia.
  • Chronic kidney disease develops when the kidneys are permanently damaged, with an increasing incidence with age. Chronic kidney failure can also be caused by conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

In the nephrology clinic, kidney function is checked by urine and blood tests and imaging tests (ultrasound, Doppler scans of the renal vessels).
