Back hand X-ray
A hand x-ray shows the internal structures of the hand, i.e. the bones and soft tissues. This diagnostic tool can help your doctor find and detect injuries or degenerative diseases affecting one or both hands.
What are X-rays good for?
Your doctor may order an X-ray to:
- examine the area where you feel pain or discomfort;
- follow up on a diagnosed condition, such as healing of a fracture, arthritis or osteoporosis; or
- check how effective the prescribed treatment is.
What is an X-ray?
X-rays are a common imaging test that has been used for decades. It uses X-rays to painlessly take summation images of an area of the body in different directions. It can help doctors diagnose and monitor many diseases.
Other diagnostic imaging devices use X-rays in addition to X-ray machines, including mammography, operating theatres and angiography labs, bone densitometers and CT scanners.
When is a hand x-ray necessary?
Hand x-rays can help doctors find the cause of pain, tenderness, swelling and possible deformities. It can also detect broken bones or dislocated joints. Once a broken bone has been fixed, an X-ray can show whether the bones are healing properly.
Hand x-rays can help doctors:
- Plan surgery, if necessary, and check the results afterwards;
- detect cysts, subsequent infections, tumours and other diseases in the bones; and
- to check the age of the bones to diagnose abnormalities that affect proper growth.
How does a hand x-ray work?
When the hand is x-rayed, the x-ray machine transmits x-rays through the hand and the resulting image is recorded on special x-ray film or, in the case of digital x-rays, on a computer. This image gives a picture of the bones and soft tissues.
- During the procedure, the patient is asked to place their hand on an examination table.
- You should not move while the X-ray is being taken.
- The X-ray assistant may place the hand in different positions to take the series of images.
- In some cases, doctors may ask for an X-ray of the opposite (uninjured) hand for comparison.
- The resulting images are assessed by a radiologist.
