The Doppler (colour, duplex) scan is a routine ultrasound diagnostic test technique. It is used to check the blood flow and condition of the blood vessels. As with other ultrasound examinations, high frequency ultrasound is delivered to the part of the body to be examined and the patterns of sound waves reflected from the tissue are analysed.
What does this mean in this case? The sound waves emitted by the probe reflect off the shaped elements of blood flowing through the blood vessels. The information carried by the reflected ultrasound wave is analysed and visualised by the computer. The speed of blood flow is displayed by colour coding. In addition, the volume of blood flowing through the blood vessels can be calculated.
The examining doctor can then see the condition of the blood vessel and whether it is circulating properly. The technique can sometimes perform a vital diagnostic function, but it can also be of great help in other situations, such as determining the need for surgery or medication.
Thrombosis or risk of thrombosis
Risk of stroke
Risk of stroke or risk of stroke risk
Detection of other circulatory problems, insufficiencies
Doppler type tests are most commonly performed on the carotid arteries, also called carotid ultrasound scans. It can also be done on the rectal arteries and veins, as well as abdominal blood vessels during an abdominal ultrasound scan. Measuring the circulation also provides information about lesions in internal organs, which are examined by our doctors during an examination of the region.
A Doppler scan is a so-called non-invasive test. This means that the examining device is used by the treating doctor from outside the body cavity, without the need to penetrate the body cavity. This means that the test is not painful or uncomfortable. For ultrasound examinations, a special device is pressed onto the area by the doctor and an ultrasound gel is used on the surface. The ultrasound gel is a mediating substance that is essential for the propagation of the ultrasound, it can be wiped off and removed from the material if it is worn.
