What does prostate cancer mean and what is behind it?

The prostate gland, also known as the glandular gland, is an extremely important sex gland in men that surrounds the urethra. Any abnormality of the prostate can lead to unpleasant symptoms, can cause major obstruction to urination, and can even lead to complete inability to urinate, which can be caused by an enlarged prostate or a tumour.

In which cases is prostate removal or reduction justified?

Removal or reduction of the prostate may be warranted in any case where the enlargement is already making it difficult for urine to flow from the bladder.

How does prostate surgery work?

A lesion that makes it difficult to urinate can be corrected by partial prostatectomy or by reducing the size of the gland. A specially designed surgical endoscopic device can be used to remove the enlargement or tumour through the urethra. This is the main procedure used. Timely treatment is important, as progression of the disease can lead to permanent symptoms, urinary retention, permanent urethral catheterisation, damage to the bladder wall, urinary tract infections, bladder stone formation, bladder bleeding and artificial kidney treatment.

Consequences of prostate removal: what outcome can be expected after surgery?
  • improves quality of life
  • improved urine flow, significantly reducing the chance of urine leakage
  • urinary symptoms may be reduced or eliminated
  • recurrent bladder infections are eliminated
  • possible further treatment can be better planned on the basis of the histological sample obtained
Is there any other treatment or solution?

Endoscopic urethral surgery is an option:

  • open abdominal removal surgery
  • open open abdominal surgery
  • medical treatment
  • permanent catheterisation
  • microwave treatment through the urethra
  • the insertion of urethral and dilator devices to ensure urine flow through the urethra
Time and duration of prostate surgery

The duration of prostate surgery depends largely on the type of procedure – it generally takes about 1 hour.

How long will the recovery take?
  • On medical advice, physical rest for a few weeks, followed by gradual exercise and a balanced lifestyle are recommended for a speedy recovery.
