In which cases can breast reduction be triggered?

The need for breast reduction can occur at any age, as extreme breast enlargement or sagging can occur at any stage of life. Breast reduction removes excess fatty tissue, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts, repositioning the areola to create firm, proportionate breast shapes. This can be due to age, as the skin’s collagen and elastic fibres decrease with age, causing the skin to lose its firmness and become flabby, loose and sagging naturally. This may also be the case in the case of significant weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

In addition to aesthetic complaints, it can also cause psychological problems for the patient.
These may include:
– chronic neck, shoulder, back pain
– regular rash, redness under the breasts
– restricted movement, sports
– negative self-image, lack of self-confidence

How is the surgery done?

Among female breast aesthetic surgery, breast reduction requires extremely precise planning and execution. It can be required at any age, but is always performed after puberty, when no further growth is expected.

The aim of the procedure is to lift the nipple and areola to juvenile levels, tighten the glands and remove excess for a harmonious and lifted breast shape. The operation is performed under surgical conditions under general anaesthesia.

During surgery, the plastic surgeon can use several techniques to perform the desired procedure. He can make vertical, anchor (inverted T) or circular incisions around the areola, and then use these incisions to remove excess skin and fat to achieve the desired firmness.

Because large breasts sag, breast reduction surgery is also a breast lift. After the surgery, the patient is fitted with a special bra that must be worn for a period of time determined by the doctor.

What can I expect after the operation?

– better well-being, more self-confidence
– visibly firmer, more aesthetically pleasing breasts
– neck, shoulder and back pain from heavy weight can be eliminated
– easier, freer movement, sports
– scars remain visible but tend to fade over time (within 1-3 years)

How long will the recovery take?

After surgery, depending on the individual, the hospital stay can last 1-2 days, but the patient can usually return home the day after surgery.

After the operation, the patient is fitted with a special compression bra, which must be worn around the clock for at least 1.5 months. Physical rest is important for a few weeks, followed by gradual exercise and a balanced lifestyle to ensure a speedy recovery.

From 6 weeks after surgery, gentle, gradual exercise is possible. The overall recovery varies from person to person, as the pace of rehabilitation and the general condition and activity prior to surgery are largely determined by the patient’s level of rehabilitation.

In addition to recovery, it is important to note that there are no contraindications to pregnancy or breastfeeding after surgery, but breastfeeding difficulties may occur after breast reduction.

What are the possible complications?

– bleeding, bruising
– wound infection
– necrosis of skin, fat or glandular tissue
– partial or complete necrosis of the nipple
– scar healing disorder – nipple sensory disturbances
– asymmetry
– deep vein thrombosis
– pulmonary embolism
