When might you need breast augmentation?

Perhaps the most important symbol of femininity is the female breast and cleavage. So it is understandable that every woman wants to have aesthetic, beautiful breasts. However, due to genetics or the passage of time, many women are not satisfied with the size and shape of their breasts. Breast hypoplasia means small breasts, i.e. the size of the breasts is not proportionate to the patient’s body shape. Hypoplasia may be a pre-existing condition (e.g. a problem during puberty) or may occur later, for example after significant weight loss or breastfeeding, or as a result of hormonal problems.

Breast augmentation with implants is a solution for increasing the size of the breasts, correcting possible asymmetry, or corrections required after childbirth or breastfeeding.

Inadequate breast volume often causes problems for the patient:

– physical or mental suffering
– or physical or mental distress
– lack of femininity and self-confidence
– low self-confidence can also lead to an inferiority complex.

Breast augmentation provides a solution to these problems. The procedure can be performed at any time over the age of 18, but is not recommended below this age.

When is surgery contraindicated?

– active infection
-pre-cancer or pre-cancerous condition who have not yet received appropriate treatment -pregnant or breast-feeding women
– autoimmune disease
– illnesses that impede wound healing and clotting
– weakened immune system
– reduced blood supply to breast tissue

About the implant

Most implants used in the world are pre-filled with silicone gel. These implants have been used for more than 40 years, have proven to be safe and are the best for surgical purposes as they closely resemble the breast’s own consistency.

In addition to reliability, the new generation of implants are available in different shapes, so they can be customised to suit the patient’s needs. In addition to the classic round implants, oval and anatomical “teardrop” shapes can give a more pronounced result. The implants have a silicone elastomer shell, which can be either roughened or smooth.

The variety of shapes and sizes allows the choice of implants that can be tailored to the patient’s body shape and expectations.

The pre-operative period

The doctor and the patient choose the best option together during the pre-surgery consultation, taking into account the relevant parameters – height, weight, pregnancy, breastfeeding, body type, body fat content, breast size, muscle tone).

After assessing the above parameters and the patient’s anatomy, the plastic surgeon will then determine the surgical plan, taking into account the preferred surgical technique, the patient’s expectations, the location of the wounds, the size and type of the implants and their position (under or over the muscle).

How is the surgery done?

Depending on the surgical technique used and the extent of the correction, the procedure may take a few hours. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, during which a plastic surgeon makes a few centimetres of skin incision and then inserts the appropriate shape and size of implant under the gland or muscle.

Post-surgery period

For the first two weeks it is important to avoid any strenuous physical activity, and then you can gradually return to your previous lifestyle, with light exercise being allowed after six weeks. Tanning beds, sunbathing and saunas are contraindicated for two months.

Complications

The chances of complications after breast augmentation are low, but they can occur if complications do occur:

– blood and acid reflux
– wound infection, wound separation
– formation of a scar
– temporary or permanent change in the sensitivity of the nipples or the breast
– asymmetry of the breasts
– tissue necrosis: partial/terminal necrosis of skin, areola and nipple

Specific known hazards

– gel diffusion, leakage and granuloma formation
– rupture
– capsular contracture : the scar tissue, or capsule, that normally forms around the implant may become taut, compressing the implant. Rarely, lime may be deposited in the tissue surrounding the implant. This can cause tightness, pain and, in severe cases, an unpleasant appearance.
– wrinkling, folding – rejection – breast tissue atrophy (atrophy)
– development of anaplastic large cell lymphoma

What outcome can you expect?

The results are visible after 2-3 months from surgery, which is the time needed for the breasts to soften and the implants to settle.

During the healing process, not only the volume but also the shape of the breasts improves. The scars are usually barely visible. The new volume of the breasts affects the overall body shape, which also means that the patient can dress prettier. Thanks to the emphasis on femininity, the improvement in aesthetic appearance is usually followed by a positive psychological development.

Dissatisfaction with the cosmetic result: this can be triggered by deformity, displacement, migration, wrong size, asymmetry, undesirable contour, protrusion and sagging of the breasts

How long will the implant last?

Although there are some patients whose implants remain in good condition for decades, no specific expiry date can be determined for any type of implant (silicone gel/saline-filled). A patient with an implant should expect to have to replace the implant at some point to maintain its original condition. Whatever the type of implant, it is impossible to predict its lifespan, as it can be highly variable.
