Chest pain ambulance

Sudden onset of pain in the chest is a frightening phenomenon, and it is right to seek medical attention. An expert medical examination is able to distinguish pain of cardiac origin from chronic stress, diseases of the oesophagus, lung or pleural disease, or even abdominal organ problems (pancreatitis, cholecystitis) that radiate pain to the chest.

When should you contact the chest pain clinic?

In our specialised outpatient clinic, we identify the origin of chest pain with targeted specialist tests. Our main aim is to identify or rule out the most dangerous cause, coronary artery disease. Our outpatient clinic has a unique access to a full range of state-of-the-art cardiological testing procedures. We are waiting for you if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Chest pain on exertion in the last two months, but no previous history of coronary artery disease
  • Difficulty breathing on exertion in the last two months, but no previous history of coronary artery disease
  • Exertional chest pain and/or dyspnoea in the last two months with known coronary artery disease

Exertional chest pain and/or shortness of breath in the last 2 months?

What happens in the chest pain clinic?

After a basic assessment (blood pressure, pulse, height, weight) and an ECG scan, you will be seen by a specialist cardiologist who will discuss your symptoms and set up a treatment plan. We will then carry out laboratory tests (blood count, blood sugar, blood lipids, liver and kidney function), chest X-ray, cardiac ultrasound, coronary CT scan or 24-hour ECG monitoring (Holter) or 24-hour blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), depending on your needs, even on the same day.

Possible outcomes of a chest pain outpatient examination

Exclude significant coronary artery disease (coronary CT findings showing normal coronary artery status or mild coronary calcification)

  • Information on how to reduce your cardiovascular risks without medication.
  • Based on the results, we will provide you with personalised lifestyle advice and a drug treatment plan if necessary.
  • Based on your complaints and symptoms and your needs, we will refer you to a specialist with outstanding expertise in your field.

We confirm significant coronary artery disease

  • In the case of angina pectoris, it is important to set up an appropriate anti-anginal treatment and reduce the risk of angina before the results of diagnostic tests are available.
  • In the case of confirmed coronary artery disease with significant stenosis, we will adjust the medication and help you until the coronary stenosis is finally resolved (coronary stenting or coronary artery bypass surgery).
