Adult congenital heart disease clinic

The majority of children with congenital heart disease live to adulthood thanks to successful paediatric cardiac surgery, but they usually require special care and monitoring for the rest of their lives. Regardless of the type of congenital heart disease, arrhythmias and heart failure are common in these adults. For them, adult decisions require more planning and specialist consultation. Sport, contraception, having children and employment may also present particular challenges. With our outpatient clinic, we aim to create continuity in cardiological follow-up after childhood and to provide the conditions for regular follow-up.

When should you contact us?

  • Regardless of the complaint, if the child had regular cardiological follow-up as a child
  • Complaint-free if there is a known congenital heart disease but no need for regular follow-up or a family history of heredity (e.g. atrial septal defect, bicuspid aortic valve)
  • If you have complaints of irregular rapid heartbeats, fatigue, choking on minor exertion, leg stiffness or any chest complaints, high or fluctuating blood pressure.
  • If you are planning a pregnancy or are already pregnant and have or suspect you have congenital heart disease
  • If pulmonary hypertension is suspected.
