Gastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy

Digestive diseases such as colorectal and stomach cancer can be cured if detected early. And endoscopic gastroscopy and colonoscopy is one way to detect these serious diseases early.

What are gastroscopy and colonoscopy for?

Both gastroscopy and colonoscopy are endoscopic procedures. Endoscopy is a visual examination of the body cavities using long and thin flexible telescopes connected to a video monitor. The procedure is called gastroscopy when the endoscope is inserted through the mouth to examine the stomach. And colonoscopy is performed through the anus to examine the colon and rectum.

Gastroscopy and colonoscopy in Budapest

Colonoscopy is an excellent way of diagnosing colonic polyps, inflammations and tumours, but it can also be used to find the cause of bleeding from the rectum and colon, and lower abdominal pain. Colonoscopy can be used to remove polyps using an endoscopic loop, so the development of colorectal cancer can be almost completely prevented by regular colonoscopies every 5 years.

Most gastroscopy and colonoscopy is done under general anaesthesia to avoid discomfort. Gastroscopy can be used to take histological samples and to diagnose certain conditions such as gastric ulcers, inflammations, polyps or tumours. Gastroscopy can also screen for abnormalities such as reflux and the associated Barret’s metaplasia, which can also be diagnosed as a cancer-preventing condition.” ( According to the doctor, this is a cancer-preventing condition, like polyps in the colon.) Therefore, its diagnosis and treatment is of utmost importance, as a significant number of patients in the target group of WMC complain of reflux-like symptoms, excessive gastric acid production. Untreated reflux can also cause serious complications, so diagnosis and treatment of reflux is also of paramount importance.

How is colonoscopy performed under general anaesthesia?

Colonoscopy is used to examine the lower gastrointestinal tract. The endoscope is inserted through the anus and then the rectum and the entire colon are examined in an upward direction. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Colonoscopy can be performed without anaesthesia and under general anaesthesia. The procedure is painless, rather than uncomfortable. At the Wáberer Medical Center, most procedures are performed under a superficial anaesthetic, which puts the patient into a deep stupor and then into a sleeping state. They will be fully awake within half an hour to an hour after the procedure. A big advantage is that the patient is spared any unpleasant experiences and can typically return to their daily activities quickly.

Detailed preparation material on pre-examination dietary preparation will be sent in each case and must be strictly adhered to. The procedure can only be carried out if the intestinal walls have been cleansed as much as possible of all contamination.

Gastroscopy under anaesthesia and local anaesthesia

A gastroscopy is an examination of the upper alimentary canal, usually lasts about 3-15 minutes and is performed by a doctor specialising in gastroenterology. You should fast for 6 hours before the procedure. The patient is asked to lie on their left side and given an intravenous sedative or put to sleep. The endoscope is then carefully inserted through the mouth into the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. The examination is painless, even with local anaesthesia and general anaesthesia (superficial anaesthesia)!

After the procedure, you will be closely monitored in a safe environment by our professionals, and then progressively reduced, in order to follow your condition until you are back to your best (pulse and blood pressure are not fluctuating, you are not dizzy, you can dress, you have been drinking and eating). On average, this takes 40-90 minutes.

The doctor who performs the procedure will inform you of the results of the procedure and what to do if you are awake
