Infant screening

Infant screening

Prevention and early treatment of neonatal diseases One of the most important screening tests in infancy is the newborn ultrasound scan, recommended by paediatricians because it is painless, accurate and reliable. Four per cent of babies often have an asymptomatic disorder or developmental delay that can be detected by ultrasound scanning in infancy. Problems detected early can provide an opportunity for a cure, as the resulting diseases can be prevented and effectively treated.

Babies for whom screening is particularly recommended

Screening is important for all babies around six weeks of age, with no pain or side effects associated with ultrasound scans. In cases where the baby was born prematurely, has a respiratory disorder, or has had a complication or infection during delivery, or has a family history of hip dysplasia or metabolic disease, it is particularly recommended. The ultrasound scan of the infant reveals congenital abnormalities of the organs, developmental delay, complications of possible infections, as well as abnormalities, injuries and haemorrhages associated with childbirth.

What does the test consist of?

The aim of the hip examination is to detect signs of underdevelopment of the hip joint, signs of hip dysplasia. If detected early, it may be possible to correct the discrepancy by exercising, wearing a properly fitted sling, or wearing a brace. An examination of the skull will reveal the bones behind the skull, the cerebral ventricles, possible calcifications and haemorrhages, as well as malformations, birth injuries, and abnormalities due to lack of oxygen. The abdomen is examined to assess the condition of the liver, gall bladder, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder and pancreas. Further dysfunction of the urinary system can be prevented and inflammation can be prevented. Asymptomatic adrenal haemorrhage can be detected, and signs of neural tissue tumours originating from the adrenal gland can be identified. Preparing for the test – Screening is optimal between 6-8 weeks of age, but can be done up to six months of age – The test takes 20 minutes – It is recommended that you bring a change of clothes for your baby to the test.

Recommended paediatric orthopaedic tests

Recommended paediatric orthopaedic tests

It is worth having an annual orthopaedic check-up, but it is highly recommended at the beginning of pre-school, before starting school, and at the age of 10 and 14, as rapid growth is often not followed by proper muscular development, which can upset the balance of the musculoskeletal system. In early school age, attention should be paid to foot deformities, axial deviations of the limbs and early types of scoliosis. In adolescence, in addition to static deformities of the foot, the most common problems are those of the spine: sloppy posture, scoliosis.
