Facial plastic surgery

Ageing of the skin and therefore of the face is a natural process.

  • As we age, our skin loses water and collagen, which reduces its firmness.
  • As connective tissues atrophy, our skin becomes loose, flabby and sagging.
  • The loss of elasticity causes more wrinkles to form on the face.

In addition, a number of environmental factors (e.g. sunlight, pollution), as well as certain harmful lifestyle habits and situations (e.g. stress, smoking, sudden weight loss and illness) all leave their mark on the skin, accelerating the ageing process.

With facial plastic surgery, our aim is to hide these less-loved features, highlighting and revealing the beauty that lies within you.

In which cases is it recommended?

Facial plastic surgery is designed to create a more youthful, firmer appearance. This can be achieved by excising excess sagging facial and neck skin, tightening stretched muscles and skin, and replacing or removing excess subcutaneous fat.

It is not uncommon for our patients to have a ‘disfigured’ face as a result of sagging facial skin: sagging tissues (e.g. around the mouth, eyelids) may make them look angry or tired when they are not. In these cases, minor corrections (e.g. facial fillers) can no longer achieve spectacular results.

It is the most common procedure in plastic surgery, involving surgical correction of the face and neck from the temples to the jaw.

In the case of a facelift and neck lift, we can talk about:

  • total facelift (the entire face and neck);
  • temporoplasty (upper face only);
  • forehead plastic surgery;
  • neck plastic surgery.

The aim of the surgery is therefore to restore the various anatomical structures of the face and neck (skin, muscles, fatty tissue), so that our patients look a few years younger, while preserving the original shape and appearance of their face.

The procedure is recommended for anyone who wants to achieve a spectacular improvement.

Procedure of the operation

Consultation

During the first consultation, our plastic surgeon will perform a physical examination, which will

  • assess which surgery and which areas need correction;
  • outline the expected scar size following surgery;
  • describe any side effects that may occur;
  • clarify your individual expectations.

Our specialist will provide you with a personalised solution based on your lifestyle habits, medical history and skin condition.

Terms and conditions

  • A full pre-operative examination is required and is provided in our clinic.
  • You are not allowed to take blood thinners for 10 days prior to surgery. If this is not possible, a cardiology consultation is mandatory before surgery.
  • Smoking cessation is strongly advised 1 month before surgery, as cigarette smoking can cause scar healing disorders, skin necrosis and increase the possibility of infection.

The surgery

The operation can take several hours (2-5 hours) and therefore requires very thorough and careful preparation.
The operation can be performed under local anaesthesia or under general anaesthesia. If local anaesthesia is chosen, the whole surgical area has to be injected, which causes discomfort.
The skin is incised around the ears and where it is almost completely covered by hair. So the scars will be less noticeable.
After the incisions, our plastic surgeon will lift the skin away from the underlying areas to a lesser or greater extent, depending on the degree of sagging of the skin.
To correct the sagging, he will gently and carefully tighten the muscle layer without altering the normal appearance of the face. Any localised fat deposits on the cheeks, chin, chin or neck are removed by liposuction or mechanical techniques. If there is a lack of fat tissue, liposculpture, i.e. autologous fat filling, is used to achieve the desired result.
The lifted skin is put back in place over the repositioned muscles. The resulting excess skin is removed, and then our plastic surgeon uses sutures to secure the scar line.
At the end of the operation, you will wear a bandage covering the entire head, a special (compression) headband: only the centre of the face will be left free. In men, the procedure can be more difficult because of thicker skin and the shape of the beard, and it is more difficult to hide the scars if the hair is thin or bald.
After the surgery, you can relax in the calm, premium surroundings of our centre and, depending on your condition, you may be discharged home the same day after a short observation under local anaesthetic, or the next day if you are under anaesthetic.

All our surgeons work with their own special techniques, but as with all plastic surgery, their primary goal is to keep in mind and create a natural result.

Post-surgery period

The healing of surgical scars varies from person to person. It also depends on the patient whether an anticoagulant injection should be given before or after surgery. Stitches are usually removed after 14-21 days. To ensure a speedy recovery, please note the following:

  • get as much rest as possible for the first 10 days;
  • Avoid major physical exertion, sunbathing or any intense heat that may cause the face to flush (e.g. spicy foods, alcohol);
  • it is recommended to wash your hair for the first time about 1 week after the operation;
  • face make-up should be applied after 3 weeks;
  • eat easily chewable, rather mushy foods;
  • hair dyeing is prohibited during the first 3 weeks!

During this time it is perfectly natural to experience the following:

  • oedema (swelling), which may be worse on the second day after surgery than on the first day;
  • bruising around the face and neck;
  • painful, tight, heavy feeling behind the ears and around the neck.

The ears and face may remain slightly “numb” for a few months. The bruising and swelling will recede in 2-3 weeks after surgery, and the oedema will usually subside after 1 month.

The areas where the skin has been removed may appear harder to the touch, but there is minimal skin lesion.

Scars are covered by hair and are only visible around the ears, but can be covered by make-up for the first few months.

Possible complications

Although complications are very rare, it is worth being aware of the rare complications:

  • hematomas (haematomas)
  • infection:
  • scar healing disorder.
  • skin necrosis
  • skin sensitivity disorders
  • very rare facial nerve injury, which may result in paralysis of one side of the face.

When carrying out preliminary examinations and during the personal consultation, our primary aim is to screen out all possible risk factors.

Result

The result of the surgery is definitive after 1 year. The durability of your “new” face will depend on your age, your physique and other factors.

It is perfectly natural that scars may still be pale pink and more sensitive to touch 2-3 months after surgery.

Thanks to the state-of-the-art surgical techniques used by our plastic surgeons, an advanced technology background and extremely thorough and personalised post-operative care, you will undergo a comprehensive rejuvenation that will give you a completely natural appearance.

The improvement in physical appearance is usually accompanied by psychological development. The aim of the procedure is to achieve rejuvenation, but not perfection. It is important to make it clear that deep wrinkles etched into the skin will not disappear with surgery. You will only be truly satisfied with the result if you have a realistic vision of the surgery. A facelift and neck lift can delay the visible signs of ageing in the long term, but it does not stop the natural ageing process. If necessary, the surgery can be repeated several times in years to come.
