Thyroidectomy

Thyroidectomy

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland, a hormone-producing organ, located in the midline of the neck at the level of the larynx. On its posterior surface are the parathyroid glands, which also produce hormones. These hormones stimulate metabolism and tissue growth, promote brain development and increase glucose and amino acid transport.

Endoscopic Thyroidectomy

At Wáberer Medical Center, our specialist performs oral endoscopic Thyroidectomy if the patient is suitable. This method does not require any external incisions and leaves the highest percentage of vocal cords intact of all options.

All operations are performed under surgical conditions and under general anesthesia.

Thyroid surgery leaves a scar on the neck, which is visible and difficult to clean, and can affect patients’ quality of life in the long term. Over the past two decades, a number of so-called minimally invasive surgical procedures have been developed to reduce the size or reduce the visibility of thyroid surgery scars. The diversity of methods indicates that no single procedure has been able to adequately provide the expected healing and cosmetic results. Surgeries through natural orifices in the body result in healing without visible scarring. Of the surgical procedures developed from the oral approach, the Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA) has been shown to be the safest and most successful. It can be used in cases of small cystic thyroid nodules, nodular lobules, small thyroid cancers with a favorable prognosis (papillary carcinoma) and benign tumors of the parathyroid gland (adenoma).

The crucial actions to be take in the following two weeks after surgery
  • Avoiding infection: the wound is closed with absorbable thread, so no suturing is necessary. The wound can be showered or covered with a sterile dressing from the second to third day after surgery.
  • Avoid strain: pressing hard, bending over, lifting heavy objects.
  • Start of medication: after complete thyroidectomy, the endocrinologist will help you to start hormone replacement with the help of a hormone prescription in the correct dosage. Calcium levels should be checked the day after the operation, and depending on this, the doctor will recommend taking the vitamin orally.
How long does recovery take?

The patient can return home 2-3 days after the operation, but it is important to take it easy for a few weeks, then gradually exercise and a balanced lifestyle is recommended for a speedy recovery, which should be followed for 1-2 weeks to return to a normal lifestyle.

Healing of the skin wound (if not using an endoscopic procedure) takes 7-10 days, at which time the sutures will be removed.

Complete relief is expected in 3-4 weeks, at which time active sports can be practiced.
