It is recommended that you come to the CT scan in clothing without metal (zips, buttons, rivets, sequins, clasps) in the area of interest, or it is practical to bring such clothing with you. If not, a gown and slippers will be provided for changing.
The CT contrast agent is an iodine-containing compound, which makes it easier to visualise the condition of soft tissues and blood vessels, and gives a more accurate picture of the type, location and extent of lesions. Although rare, the contrast agent used in the test can cause hypersensitivity reactions, allergies, which are usually mild. These may include rapid onset and then transient warmth, heat, unpleasant taste sensations. It is important to note, however, that the risk of a contrast agent test is much lower than the risk of a missed test if a serious disease is not detected.
If intravenous contrast material is to be administered, the kidney function should be checked before administration. This is done by taking a blood sample from the laboratory. Please bring a laboratory report with you that is no more than 2 weeks old. The following parameters will be tested on the blood test: creatinine, urea, eGFR.
