What is dermatology? What tests can be used to diagnose skin lesions? What can dermatologists do to help?

What is the role of dermatology?

Dermatology is the branch of medicine that deals with skin diseases, their symptoms, pathologies and treatments, but also includes acne, hair, and conditions affecting the mucous membranes of the eyelids, nose and mouth.

What does a dermatologist do?

  • Skin symptoms can be caused by a number of internal conditions, such as diabetes mellitus,
  • hypo- and hyperthyroidism,
  • other endocrinological disorders (excessive hair growth – hirsutism, hormonal problems which can lead to severe hair loss, itchy, dry skin which may indicate a kidney problem),
  • malabsorption,
  • food intolerances,
  • (acne skin, eczema-like rashes)

Because of the above, the work of dermatologists is very important and can generally be divided into three areas, which are:

  • Therapeutic. Dermatologists can diagnose and treat problems affecting the skin. This includes conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea and acne. Your dermatologist may also identify symptoms on your skin that could be signs of other medical conditions. For example, itchy, dry skin can sometimes indicate kidney problems.
  • Surgical. Many dermatologists perform minor surgeries, such as removing moles, warts or skin biopsies. Other dermatologists specialise in more extensive surgery. These procedures may involve the removal of benign cysts or malignant skin lesions.
  • Cosmetology. A dermatologist may also treat skin problems that affect your appearance. These may include hair loss, dark spots, veins or wrinkles. Many dermatologists also specialize in cosmetic treatments such as wrinkle fillers, chemical peels and laser treatments.

The most common skin diseases

  • Acne, pimply skin
  • Allergic skin diseases (hives/urticaria, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, food and drug allergies). Allergic patients may have an immune system that is so sensitive to certain substances that inflammation develops in their body. These inflammatory processes can cause damage to the body – eczema, hives. The most common allergic reaction is eczema, which can be acute or rapid, spontaneously healing or chronic.
  • moles, benign and malignant skin tumours, epithelial tumours, melanoma, skin appendages – sebaceous, sweat gland, benign and malignant tumours of the hair
  • Associated skin disorders with autoimmune or other immunological conditions (butterfly-shaped redness of the face), plaque-like skin lesions (e.g. psoriasis), pigmentation disorders (e.g. vitiligo)
  • Skin lesions of viral origin (viral warts, molluscum contagiosum, etc.)
  • Fungal skin diseases (toenail fungus, dermatomycosis)
  • Skin conditions caused by bacterial infection (acne, acne, furuncles, impetigo, etc.)
  • Eczema (dry skin, allergies) – dry, flaky, itchy skin, small blisters (seropapules), inflamed, scaly patches, redness
  • Vascular diseases, skin haemorrhages, vasculitis
  • Hair loss, which may also be caused by skin conditions
  • Psoriasis (psoriasis)
  • Rosacea
  • Caries disorders, pigmentation disorders, skin symptoms of metabolic/endocrinological disorders
