Diabetology is a branch of medicine that deals with carbohydrate metabolism in the body and diseases of sugar metabolism. The diabetologist assesses the risk factors for diabetes, and carries out general internal medicine and physical examinations. In the case of suspected diabetes mellitus or a diagnosis of type I and type II diabetes, he or she determines the therapy and monitors the patient’s health during regular diabetic check-ups. Diabetes is now almost a widespread disease. Unfortunately, diabetes is often diagnosed only when the disease is already causing problems for the patient.
Diabetes cannot yet be cured, but it can be controlled with a proper diet, physical activity and medication. However, if medical advice is not followed, and if the wrong lifestyle is followed, diabetes can unfortunately lead to a wide range of complications. The complications of diabetes affecting the small blood vessels include eye, kidney and nervous system diseases. These include visual impairment, nerve pain, numbness and kidney dysfunction such as protein excretion in the urine. Complications of diabetes affecting large blood vessels include coronary artery disease (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction), stroke (stroke or cerebral infarction), lower limb vasoconstriction, and in men, erectile dysfunction. People with diabetes have a higher incidence and more severe course of certain infections (fungal infections, certain bacterial infections) due to their weakened immune system.
