What does obesitology deal with?

Obesity medicine helps to restore the body mass index of overweight and obese patients by assessing their metabolic status, investigating the causes of obesity and, in the light of this, treating them to correct the excess weight.

Obesity, or obesity in medical terms, is affecting an increasing number of people in developed countries. Almost two-thirds of the population of Hungary is overweight or obese.
Abdominal obesity affects more than 55% of men and almost 80% of women over the age of 65.

The definition of obesity is based on the ratio of body mass index derived from height and weight.






What are the risks of being overweight?

As weight increases, the risk of developing certain diseases increases:

  • high blood pressure
  • increased blood fat levels
  • heart disease
  • fatty liver
  • fatty liver disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • gallstones
  • sleep apnoea
  • certain malignant cancers (breast, uterine, colon, rectal and prostate),
  • respiratory and musculoskeletal diseases.
